Vex: spell removal into cascading Gloom

Vex · from r/LegendsOfRuneterra · 2026-10-14

Spread Gloom with removal and safe attacks. At six stars, one enemy dying outside combat can start a board-wide chain.

Build

Needs 6★Champion level 30

Overview

Fear-Cleaving Axe with Death's Foil is the popular core; some players prefer spell-only control. This build uses the attack package with Utmost Despair to seed Gloom. It assumes six stars; the fourth-star Nexus damage and sixth-star chain are separate upgrades, not effects every lower-star setup has.

The build

Fear-Cleaving Axe

Attack: Boost all units. This increases existing Gloom on enemies and Spirit on allies. Establish Gloom before attacking so the enemy half of the trigger has something to increase.

Death's Foil

The equipped champion cannot take damage or die while attacking. It enables repeated attacks into large blockers; that protection does not cover enemy attacks, removal outside your attack, or other allies.

Utmost Despair

Play: Grant enemies Gloom. This seeds the board immediately when you play Vex, before the next attack or round-start Boost.

How to play

Keep cheap removal such as Pie Toss and use Withering Wail when weakening several enemies is more valuable than hitting one. With Psychological Warfare, spell and Skill damage to enemies becomes Gloom. Aim for a kill outside combat to trigger Explosive Finale and, at six stars, Everything is Misery.

Play Vex to seed Gloom, then attack to Boost it when you have the attack token. On a defensive turn, prioritize removal and blockers: the Axe does nothing until you attack, and the Foil does not make Vex an invulnerable blocker. Avoid spending all your mana on a partial reduction that leaves the opening enemy board lethal.

Drafting and alternatives

The common drafting advice is cheap damaging spells, especially enemy-board damage. Charging Sigil III on acquired damaging spells is a separate constellation upgrade; check that you have it before expecting the damage described in older clears.

For a defensive caster alternative, players discuss Echoing Spirit, Frozen Tomb and Big Guns. Additional champion copies supply champion spells, the Landmark eventually supplies another Vex, and the damage power works before she arrives. The Landmark has a Countdown, so it costs a slot in fights that end before it resolves. The Grand General's Counterplan can supply spells without the epic copy relic, but does not provide its spell discount. No single build is best for every modifier.

Star-power checkpoint

Everything is Misery

When an enemy dies outside of combat, grant other enemies Gloom.
