Aatrox: equipment strikes and a durable champion

Aatrox · from r/LegendsOfRuneterra · 2026-10-14

Equip allies, use their strikes to discount the hand and turn a recurring champion spell into removal and growth.

Build

Needs 3★Champion level 30

Overview

Aatrox wins through equipped Strikes, protected attackers and a Darkin-transformation finish. This is a three-star durability plan: The Grand General's Counterplan supplies recurring champion spells, while Sentinel's Plate and The Berserker's Buckle reward surviving damage. With more stars invested, many players switch to a team-focused version instead.

The build

The Grand General's Counterplan

Round Start: Create a Fleeting copy of me in hand.

The recurring copy gives a champion spell while the champion is alive, or a replacement champion if it is removed. Keep enough mana to use the copy before Fleeting removes it.

Sentinel's Plate

Barrier When I survive damage, grant me +3|+3 and a random keyword.

The durable champion package supports repeated combat and survival triggers. Its additional effects follow the current relic text above.

The Berserker's Buckle

When I survive damage, grant me +2|+2.

Surviving damage produces permanent stats. Take survivable hits rather than sacrificing the champion before the trigger can pay off.

How to play

Equip an early ally and arrange a strike it can survive. At three stars an equipped allied strike discounts a random card in hand; the discount is not guaranteed to land on the champion. Use the cheaper cards to build the board or establish Aatrox.

Once the champion is in play, the recurring copy supplies his strike spell. Survival buffs and the durability relic support repeated combats. The Darkin transformation finish is available through the deck’s own condition, but this plan does not assume a borrowed mana relic makes the expensive champion free.

Drafting and alternatives

Keep cheap bodies and Equipment so equipped allies can Strike early and discount the hand. Do not fill your hand with expensive cards before you can safely make those Strikes. A recurring champion spell is useful only if Aatrox survives and you can pay for it.

The Beast Within with Black Shield is a widely discussed team-focused alternative: Overwhelm supplies Nexus reach while protection helps equipped allies survive enemy spells. Hidden Tome supplies spell mana when you play or level a champion; it can support your cheaper support champion too.

A signature-centered version uses The Darkin Blade for Strikes when a Darkin is played or transformed. World Ender can therefore turn a prepared equipment board into more removal. That signature isn't essential: generic protection and Stalker's Blade also work. Crownguard Inheritance is a finishing alternative when the level-up Rally lets transformed attackers connect.

Star-power checkpoint

Infernal Chains II

When an equipped ally strikes, reduce the cost of a random card in hand by 2.
