Garen · from the PoC community · 2026-10-14

Start with extra mana, grow your whole board through strikes and let Overwhelm turn favorable combat into Nexus damage.

Overview

Develop units earlier, take favorable strikes and let permanent team growth carry the fight. Luminous Orb makes the base five-health champion Titanic, Starforged Gauntlets supplies starting mana and The Beast Within gives your board Overwhelm.

It's his most popular player build. Players explicitly report using it before and after the constellation expansion. Compared with the spell-and-Hymn guide, it helps followers and early mana without waiting for a large champion-centered spell payoff.

The build

Luminous Orb

The +0|+3 raises base health from five to eight before Game Start, enabling Titanic. Sharpsight also lets the champion block Elusive enemies. Health earned by later strikes is too late for the starting check.

Starforged Gauntlets

A Titanic carrier in deck or hand at Game Start gives an extra starting gem. With the two-star mana you open on three gems; five-star starting mana raises that to four. You do not have to draw or play the champion to gain the gem.

The Beast Within

Allies have Overwhelm, and those with a subtype have +1|+1. Elites benefit from that subtype aura, then build more permanent stats when they strike. Level 30 equips the third Rare slot, with two Epic slot upgrades required.

How to play

Keep early units that can survive combat and useful interaction. Brightsteel Protector helps preserve an important attacker, while Sharpsight can make a trade favorable. Getting an ally to survive its first strike starts the three-star growth engine.

Use Single Combat on a unit that survives the exchange. It grants the strike-based buff even outside ordinary combat, but the enemy strikes back. Buffs after a strike do not prevent lethal damage already taken in that exchange.

Play Garen when you can use him safely, and work toward two strikes for his level-up. His Regeneration heals at Round End; his levelled Rally happens at Round Start when you lack the attack token. Levelling him does not itself immediately Rally without an extra effect. Build other allies too so the opponent cannot stop your entire plan by disabling one unit.

Drafting and alternatives

Take affordable bodies, strike access, protection and useful stat items. A strong wide board uses team Overwhelm better than one isolated large champion. Be selective with expensive rewards that slow the opening.

At six stars, alternative Play-strike packages can replace the mana pair. Scales of Judgment supplies champion Play strikes; Hidden Tome supplies spell mana on champion play or level-up. Black Shield improves protection. Beast's aura doesn't count when the sixth-star entry threshold is checked, so don't rely on that aura alone to make a four-attack unit eligible.

Star-power checkpoint

Three-star Demacian Might II grants an ally +2|+2 whenever it strikes. Two-star Justice supplies starting mana and recurring Single Combat. Five-star Justice II upgrades those resources, and six-star Decisive Strike adds conditional Play strikes. The basic mana-and-Overwhelm board plan needs neither of those later upgrades.
