Gnar: recurring damage and stacking Impact

Gnar · from r/LegendsOfRuneterra · 2026-10-14

Damage the enemy Nexus each round, control blockers and accumulate Impact on the surviving board.

Build

Needs 3★Champion level 30

Overview

Gnar has two plans: preserve a wide Impact board, or concentrate buffs on Gnar. Opinions differ on how well he handles difficult adventures. This build uses The Beast Within and Laurent Bladerack for the wide plan, with Archangel's Staff to fund Stun. It needs time to develop and cannot neutralize a whole enemy attack with one Stun.

The build

The Beast Within

Allies have Overwhelm; allies with a subtype also gain +1|+1. Many units in the starting deck have subtypes, making the stat bonus useful while Overwhelm carries damage through blockers.

Laurent Bladerack

Allies have Challenger. Choose trades that preserve your board so its accumulated Impact survives. It also helps direct the strongest attacker into a blocker you can disable.

Archangel's Staff

Round Start refills spell mana to pay for Wallop and other control spells. This leaves unit mana available for developing the board; it does not itself make Gnar cheaper.

How to play

Keep useful early bodies and a way to damage the enemy Nexus. Teenydactyl rewards that damage and is an important engine to protect. At three stars, Nexus damage enables the round-end grant of Impact twice; preserve attackers so those stacks remain useful next round.

Save Wallop for an enemy whose attack would be dangerous or whose block prevents a finish. On an attacking turn, a Challenger attacker with Overwhelm can pull a blocker and Stun it before combat resolves. On defense, developing blockers may matter more than spending all your mana solely to earn another Impact grant. One Stun does not solve a wide lethal board.

Drafting and alternatives

Chosen by the Stars with Archangel's Staff and Dreadway Chase Gun is a discussed taller alternative: generated damage spells enable the round's Nexus-damage condition and Augment helps Gnar grow. It sacrifices the universal Challenger package unless another effect supplies it.

Players also discuss Packed Powder with The Scourge's Stash for earlier deployment. Trigger Plunder first with Pokey Stick or Tusk Speaker; do not assume a discount before Nexus damage. For spell-heavy drafts, Sorcery supplies another way to fund control. Neither plan clears every hard adventure, and the wide and tall plans have different weaknesses.

Star-power checkpoint

Outrage II

Round End: If you've damaged the enemy Nexus this round, grant your allies Impact twice.
